Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has called on municipalities across the country to organize safe parties for learners who finished writing exams. As school year ends, many learners are eager to celebrate their achievements. However, the growing risks associated with “pens down” parties, including substance abuse, violence, and human trafficking, have raised serious concerns. These unregulated gatherings often create unsafe environments that put learners’ lives at risk.
To address this, municipalities must take the lead in organizing safe and structured alternative celebrations. These events should prioritize the safety and well-being of learners by being alcohol- and drug-free and held in secure venues with adequate monitoring by law enforcement and community members. Providing safe transportation for attendees is also essential to prevent exploitation and ensure they return home safely.
Properly planned celebrations, featuring meaningful entertainment such as live performances, sports, or motivational speakers, will allow learners to enjoy themselves responsibly. Municipalities are uniquely positioned to mobilize resources and bring together stakeholders to create an environment that ensures these celebrations are both enjoyable and safe.
By providing alternative celebrations, we can protect the safety and dignity of our youth while giving them the opportunity to celebrate responsibly.
