ATM Calls for Military Accountability & Strategic Reform Following the Tragic Loss of South African Soldiers in DR.
The African Transformation Movement (ATM) expresses its profound sorrow and outrage over the tragic loss of nine South African soldiers during the recent clashes with M23 rebels near Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These courageous men and women, deployed under the Southern African Development Community (SADC) mission, made the ultimate sacrifice in their commitment to protect peace and stability in a region fraught with conflict. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and comrades during this incredibly difficult time.

While we honor the bravery and dedication of our soldiers, we must also confront the harsh realities that have led to their untimely deaths. Reports of a deteriorating military capacity within the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) raise serious concerns about the effectiveness and safety of our troops in complex operational environments. The loss of life in such battles highlights an urgent need for introspection and action regarding the military’s current operational framework, resources, and overarching strategy.
The ATM is alarmed that the SANDF has been grappling with significant challenges, including declining equipment reliability, inadequate resources, and insufficient intelligence capabilities. It is unacceptable that our soldiers are deployed in high-stakes situations without the necessary support and tools to ensure their safety and success.
We are also concerned about reports indicating that the current military strategy does not prioritize comprehensive training and preparedness for soldiers deployed in conflict zones. Our troops must be equipped not only with modern technology but also with the tactical knowledge to navigate increasingly volatile environments effectively.
Furthermore, the ATM raises the issue that ongoing budget cuts have severely impacted military readiness, leading to a situation where vital equipment is left unrepaired, and personnel reforms are insufficient to rejuvenate the ranks. This neglect undermines the ability of the SANDF to fulfill its mission—protecting both South African interests and contributing to regional stability.

The ATM questions the wisdom of continued military involvement in the DRC, particularly when the current state of the SANDF raises concerns about operational effectiveness. A reevaluation of our military’s role in international engagements is imperative, ensuring that our soldiers are not placed in harm’s way without adequate support and strategic clarity.
It is essential for the government and military leadership to be held accountable for the decisions that lead to the deployment of our troops. The families of the fallen soldiers deserve transparency regarding the circumstances of their deployment and the measures being taken to improve the military’s operational capacity.
In light of these concerns, the ATM calls for an immediate and thorough review of the SANDF’s involvement in the DRC and other international missions. We advocate for the following actions:
An analysis of the SANDF’s current capabilities, strategic objectives, and resource allocation to ensure that our troops are adequately prepared and supported in every deployment.
A commitment to improve the maintenance and functionality of military equipment, as well as investing in the training of personnel to ensure operational readiness.
Enhancing intelligence gathering and analysis to provide our troops with critical information and situational awareness before and during deployments.
Establishing channels for communication with families of deployed soldiers to provide them with the necessary support and transparency regarding military operations.
The ATM firmly believes that our soldiers deserve a military that is resourced, prepared, and strategically guided to protect their lives and our national interests effectively. We must ensure that their sacrifices are honored not only through words but through actions that prioritize their safety and well-being.
