Gauteng has taken another significant step towards bringing essential healthcare services closer to communities with the unveiling of seven new mobile clinics equipped to provide primary healthcare services in underserved areas.
Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, officially unveiled the additional mobile clinics as part of the provincial government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery across townships, informal settlements, hostels and farming communities.
The mobile clinics are equipped with essential medical equipment and clinical examination tools designed to support healthcare workers in providing services closer to where people live. The units also feature solar-powered support systems, oxygen facilities, refrigeration units and generators, enabling them to operate in areas where access to conventional healthcare infrastructure and reliable electricity may be limited.
The new mobile units will be deployed across the Tshwane, Sedibeng, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Health Districts, expanding the reach of Gauteng’s public healthcare system and supporting communities that may face challenges travelling to fixed healthcare facilities.
For many residents in informal settlements, farming communities and other underserved areas, distance and transport costs can create significant barriers to accessing healthcare. Mobile clinics provide an important link between these communities and the broader public health system by taking essential services directly to residents.
The investment also comes at a time when South Africa’s healthcare system continues to focus on strengthening primary healthcare as the first point of contact for communities. By improving access at community level, health authorities can support earlier identification of health conditions, promote preventative healthcare and reduce unnecessary pressure on hospitals and larger healthcare facilities.
The deployment of the seven clinics demonstrates the Gauteng Government’s commitment to expanding equitable access to healthcare and ensuring that residents are not excluded from essential services because of where they live.
The initiative is expected to contribute to healthier communities by bringing healthcare services closer to people and strengthening the province’s capacity to respond to community health needs.
